Summer survey results: Recovery in the electronics supply chain?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN JOSE, CA – September 15, 2009 –VentureOutsource.com, the online resource for influential decision makers, recently published survey results from nearly 300 technology company respondents serving global electronics supply chains on the current business environment, volumes and pricing trends. Electronics OEM company respondents made up 48% of survey participants. Sponsored by IDC, click the link for complete survey findings titled, ‘Bumping along the bottom: Electronics supply chain summer ‘09 survey results‘, including detailed charts and graphs.

Half of all respondents identified themselves as “key decision makers”, up from 11% from the firm’s Q109 survey. The percentage of survey respondents who identified themselves as “participating in the decision making process” was 37%. Respondents with a “view into decision making” made up just 13%, down from 18% in VentureOutsource.com’s April ‘Electronics supply chain business outlook survey‘.

Survey questions focusing on indicators of respondent emphasis were posed with a scoring basis of 1 to 10 (1 = very negative and 10 = very positive).

Respondents were most pessimistic regarding the economic and employment situation, with average scores of 3.9 and 4.3 out of 10, respectively.

Attitudes toward business volumes, shipments or orders, as appropriate to the respondent, were stronger this time around and when compared to the average Current Index score created in the firm’s previous survey. Yet, respondents still feel we are stuck in neutral, with an average score of 5.0.

Survey respondents who address the automotive industry tied for the lowest view of the current economic situation, providing a mean score of 4.3, with the electronics networking end-market segment also coming in with a score of 4.3 out of 10.

Low scores were also recorded for electronic equipment manufacturers which likely could reflect capital cost controls manufacturers have employed to weather the current recession.

“These results show a belief business will improve, but we believe an actual broad-based expansion of business activity is not expected across the electronics supply chain in the next one or two quarters”, said VentureOutsource.com founder and president, Mark Zetter.
