Following our recent Webinar event on Cost Reduction Strategy in Semiconductor Operations, speaker Maximilian Staudinger took time to answer additional attendee questions submitted at time of registration, or during the event, which the speaker did not have time to respond to due to event time constraints. Questions and answers follow, below:
Costs keep rising for both chip design and manufacturing. Will we get to a point where Moore’s Law ends soon?
A lot of opinion leaders claim the end of Moore’s law until 2020. Nevertheless we already see today the number of applications where smaller Structures can reduce cost decreases. It is also a simple matter of volume to pay off the enormous mask and ramp cost. So we are already in a slow-down phase of Moore’s law already..
Have the cost benefits of scaling a fab operation gone away? If I look at Taiwan I still see lots of economies of scale.
In the big fab clusters they receive better service for less, can buy cheaper through alliances, practice a better knowledge exchange. Big Semi Companies are spinning off applications and the smaller companies have to produce in foundries where new technologies are provided.
Which semiconductor end-markets do you see offering the fastest growing opportunities?
Smart phones, wearable technologies, data security, Automotive.
What are some of the uncommon challenges you’ve seen moving from R&D to volume manufacturing
Cross talk within the chip, fabrication windows, technology stabilization, uniform wafer distribution, PLL issues, new requests from market
