Reducing risk in your supply chain: Techniques for selecting and verifying second sources

By VentureOutsource.com Staff

In electronics manufacturing industry, several roles and responsibilities contribute to creating robust approved vendor lists while keeping an eye on supply chain risk.

Identifying and verifying second sources for mechanical and electrical fit is part of this journey with focus on maximizing production efficiency while optimizing quality control for meeting production delivery schedules and product spec requirements for programs and equipment market requirements.

These stakeholders include engineering vice presidents, commodity managers, quality control managers, production managers, and purchasing and sourcing managers, to name a few.

There are several methods electronics manufacturing equipment companies can use to verify second sources for robust approved vendors list and bill-of-materials, such as:

Conduct a thorough review of the supplier’s technical capabilities. This includes reviewing the supplier’s technical documents, such as data sheets and product specifications, to ensure that their components and products meet the required spec standards, features and functions.

Request samples for testing is also helpful. Vendor and supplier samples can help determine if components or products meet the required specifications and quality standards.

Performing on-site audits is also helpful. On-site vendor and supplier audits of the source’s manufacturing facilities can provide valuable insight into the supplier’s quality control processes and production capabilities.

Quality certification verification cannot be overlooked as window-dressing. Trust, but verify vendors and suppliers have all necessary certifications and quality control procedures in place, such as ISO 9001 or 14001.

Engaging third-party testing and quality certification organizations and consultants can also contribute to manufacturing supply chain second source success.

Requesting references from suppliers and vendors, in addition to speaking with industry peers also working with suppliers and vendors you are considering also contributes to gaining a sense of customer satisfaction levels.
